Art Walk Stained Glass          Arts @ Sequoya          Artist in Residence Red Rohall

The Arts are very important at Sequoya!. We want the students at Sequoya to be exposed to many different forms of art. Our goal is to provide an excellent arts program that supplements what the fine arts do at Sequoya. Here is a summary of the arts programs:

Artist in Residence:

Silkscreening with Red Rohall

This program is a grant based program supported by the Arizona Commission on the Arts. The VP of Arts writes a grant for an artist that we would like to come to Sequoya. The grant pays for up to half of the expenses associated with bringing the artist to Sequoya. The other half of the money is paid by the Scottsdale School District. The Sequoya APT will pay for supplies needed.

This year our artist in residence will be the mosaic artist Jane Metzger.  She will work with all of the students at the school.  Each student will make a tile and decorate it.  These tiles will be used to tile some of the planters around the school.

Art Masterpiece

The Students at Sequoya produce two art masterpiece projects during the year. The first project is defined by the grade level:

K – Jackson Pollock - splatter painting

1 – Georgia O’Keeffe - Sunflower paintings

2 – Monet - watercolor bridge painting

3 – Andy Warhol – pop art

4 - Roy Lectenstein – pop art

5 – Ansel Adams – black and white photography and charcoal drawings

The second project is a famous artist who has ties to Arizona.  The art
masterpiece committee picks the specific artist. This year we are featuring
Arizona artist Ted DeGrazia.  Last year the students at Sequoya learned about
the local artist Paolo Soleri and the year before we studied Frank Lloyd Wright.

We also have added a project to go with Western Roundup.  This year we taught
the students the history of the cowboy hat and then the students decorated a
hat.  The Art Masterpiece volunteers decorated the boards outside the classrooms
with these wonderful creations and the school was decorated and festive for
Western Roundup.  Western Round Up 2009

Art Walk

The Art Masterpiece Projects done during the school are then displayed at Art Walk. Art Walk is an evening of arts with the display of the art masterpiece projects, the band, strings and chorus performing. Parents, family, friend and the community are welcome to attend.

Missoula Children’s Theatre

This is a performing arts opportunity for students at Sequoya to be exposed to drama. Missoula Children’s Theatre comes to Sequoya for one week during the year. The program starts with auditions on Monday and then rehearsal during the week culminating with two performances on Saturday. It is a wonderful program. It is amazing and spectacular to see Missoula produce a play in one week.

Arts in Education Field Trips

Each grade level attends a field trip sponsored by the Arts in Education Council for Scottsdale Schools.  http://www.artsined.org/  This council pays for these field trips which usually take place at the Scottsdale Center for the Arts. The field trips for this year have not been announced yet, but they will expose our children to different areas of the arts.
